Dear Friends and Family of Sid Spies:
Sid and I became friends when he visited one of his oldest and dearest friends, John Shirey, MD (ret.) with whom he attended junior high, high school and medical school at the University of Chicago. Subsequently, Sid and I tried to talk our mutual friend, John, to move from his condo into a fine, oceanfront retirement place in La Jolla before loss of memory meant he would be locked up in a less-pleasant facility. Our attempt failed but resulted in an email friendship between Sid and me. I found him to be a warm and wonderful human being. News of his death came today as a shock.
I will also tell John Shirey, whom I am sure will mourn Sid’s death greatly and feel deeply deprived of the deep friendship they had enjoyed over many decades. To this day, John thinks of Sid as his best friend since boyhood. The two of them had plotted to take a train to Chicago to visit old haunts together but they failed to connect. I hope Sid has now found, to his great surprise, that he is alive on the other side and that he has already joined several people in his life he so deeply loved when they were sharing experiences here on planet Earth.
