UCLA Visit

Hello Everyone,

This is Stephen Spies, Sid’s grandson. I just wanted to share a recollection of when Sid came to visit me. I’m currently a student at UCLA, and when he came here to visit I took him on a substantial walking tour around campus. At the end of it, we were sitting in his hotel room in a heated discussion on religion and the afterlife, when he pulled up a poem that Kay had written him a few months before her passing. He read it aloud to me, and told me that he hadn’t shown the poem to anyone else. The poem was about how she would wait for Sid, and they would both be together again in the afterlife. When he finished reading the poem, I asked him “So do you believe it?”

He responded “No… but i feel it”. Sid didn’t share her beliefs, but he loved her for the intention behind her beliefs. Can you imagine what kind of wonderful world we’d live in if every world leader shared that quality?

As an agnostic, I can’t know say I know for sure, but I’d like to believe Kay was right, and the two of them are happily sitting together now.

Sid Memorial Site Begins Its Life Today

Bob ProfileI’m happy to announce that this site begins life  today. Carol and I have barely begun to work our way through all of Dad’s journals, albums, and writings, but rather than wait until we’ve had time to finish that process, I think it’s important to make the site available now to help with the grieving process many of us are going through.

If you have memories, pictures, stories, or just thoughts you want to share about Sid, that’s what this site is for. In the Recollections section, you can write something quickly as a Comment. If you want to write something longer, just email it to me or use the Contact form, and I’ll take care of  turning it into a Post. Please take a few minutes to contribute your thoughts and memories. I know Dad won’t be able to read them, but they will enrich the lives of all of us who cared about him. [Read more…]

Shadow Mountain – Part 1

This is an unpublished Novel that Dad wrote around 2003. It’s based on a short story he had previously written (I haven’t been able to find a copy of it yet (2013-12-11)). The story was based on a real-life experience he had while hiking in the 1990’s. I believe the  location of the real incident was “Echo Mountain” in Southern California. [Read more…]

Sid As A Mentor

Dear Bob,

I am surprised and so sorry to hear of Sid’s passing, but I am also grateful for the reasons you indicate – that he went out while still sharp and able-bodied.

Sid was my mentor during my first three years of UCSF medical school, while I was jointly a graduate student at Berkeley via the Joint Medical Program (JMP). Sid was also a dear friend. [Read more…]
